commentary

This song celebrates a fully feeling way of life. Life is not only at its best when it feels good—it's at its best when we can feel the richness of all sensations—including pain. It is a lack of feeling and sensation—a numb, despondent, apathetic flatness—that robs us of life. If we accept and feel all of who we are—our joy, sadness, anger, and fear—we can live fully here, right now.

By nature, children are fully feeling, and this ability can be protected and nurtured by love and acceptance. The line "I love to see a baby in Mama's loving eyes" touches on the importance of this loving bond, and was inspired by images in my mind of my daughter Teri and my granddaughter Tayler.

This song is also a tribute to my brilliant, loving partner, Jane Lewis.

The music that developed around these ideas is a bouncy, New Orleans marching band blues. With their African/Native/Cajun/Spanish cultural mix, the people there know something about enjoying life! The melody is country blues but the structure is more traditional Louisiana folk. I play slide on an acoustic guitar tuned to open E for that old-time feel.
