love of freedom    sound clip

We are born with a Love of Freedom, now
Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
We may be down but we're not beaten, no
Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
It don't matter if they take our land
We will always rise again and
We love our children and it's a damn good reason

Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it
It's a love of freedom, right now
Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it, it's a love of freedom
Nah na-na na-na, Nah na-na na-na, yeah . . .

Sometimes children don't get what they're needin', no Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
Love is hidden and their hearts are bleedin', yeah Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
But the Love of Freedom burns inside
The night is long but the sun will rise and
We are healing with that freedom feeling

Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it
It's a love of freedom, right now
Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it, it's a love of freedom
Nah na-na na-na, Nah na-na na-na, yeah . . .

Say sister, say brother, say people, say lovin'
Say freedom . . .

Come on people lets rise and shine, now
Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
Throw off the chains of nine to five, now
Nothin' gonna stop it, nothin' gonna stop it
The whole world is waitin' on you
Is there anything else to do?
And the freedom train is right on time, now

Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it
It's a love of freedom, right now
Nothin's gonna stop this love of freedom
Nothin's gonna stop it, it's a love of freedom
Nah na-na na-na, Nah na-na na-na, yeah . . .

Nah na-na na-na, Nah na-na na-na, yeah

Freedom!

commentary

We can have our freedom taken away, beaten down, and repressed, but our true nature will always wait for a chance to break free and express itself. In every cell there is a love of freedom that never dies. Whether we are aboriginals in reservations or white wage slaves in debt, we want it back—our feelings, our rights, our land, our people, our freedom.

This is a soul anthem. It came to me when I was walking on a dirt road out in the country. As I walked along, watching the birds in the trees, I could hear all the voices and instruments just as we eventually laid them down. The soaring gospel-style vocals of Melissa, Ludlow, Celia, and Alicia elevate the whole song to another level. The steady Motown snap of Peter's drums, Jesse's bass, and Christine's crisp electric guitar lay the foundation for Drew's lush Hammond swells and Leslie speaker vibrato.
